Most oddly and inconveniently, the venue is not shown on their website, but they invariably run their games at Eardley Primary School Cunliffe Street Streatham, London SW16 6DS. Streatham Thameslink is convenient. Get there at latest 10am and before that if at all possible.

Wargame Developments (WD)Wednesday, 10/9/02, 5:09 AM

WD has been in existence since the seventies, and is a group of like-minded wargamers who are dedicated to developing wargames. It is a non-commercial organisation, and its aims are:  To provide a forum for the exchange of new ideas and concepts.  To develop both new and existing methods of recreating military conflicts. Wargame Developments was founded in 1980, and since then it has pursued its aims in several different ways. These include:  Running an annual conference (COW) - formerly the Conference Of Wargamers and now know as the Course fOr Wargamers).  Publishing a regular journal (The NUGGET) that is sent to all members nine times per year.  Putting on participation games at major wargames shows in the UK in order to demonstrate the sort of developments in wargaming that are being undertaken by members of WD.  Supporting groups of members who are working together to develop particular ideas and concepts (e.g. Megablitz - a set of operational level rules for twentieth century warfare - and Matrix Games).

The Guild of Mêlée and MagicFriday, 9/6/02, 3:18 AM

the Guild play Role Playing Games ("RPGs"). Anyone familiar with the quirks of such groups will not be surprised to read the following potted history: The Guild was originally started up in Hern Bay, Kent by an odd group of gamers. When a couple of the members moved to London, they set up a branch where they lived in Penge. This became The South London Branch. They met every Sunday. One of the members, who had come up from Hern Bay, got a job in town and decided to set up a Central London Branch. They met every Wednesday. This branch had it's ups and downs until it found a very friendly venue, at which point, with a lot of advertising, it changed to meeting every Monday and Tuesday and membership and attendance took off. In an effort to take pressure off the venue, the Central London committee and friends decided to set up another branch, based nearer where some of it's members lived. A decision was taken to go and find a venue in Bow, East London. They met every Thursday. While the East London Branch did well, Central London Branch still had a lot of people turning up. So they decided to set up another Branch. A club in West London, who had some of their members who came to Central London, decided to become the West London Branch. They met every Saturday. At about the same time, some of the members in South London had a falling out, and decided to split the South London Branch into the Penge Branch and the South London Branch. Both met every Sunday. Buy now, The Guild of Mêlée and Magic had an overall membership of about 500+ people, and a weekly attendance across the Branches of about 300 people. At this time the committee of a club in North London got a bit paranoid, and tried to ban members of The Guild going to their club (They know who they are). But all was going well. The Guild had a few members show up at most of the Conventions around the UK, and even started going to the Irish Conventions. The name and reputation of The Guild was riding high, as the largest independent gaming club in Europe (All other large groups were tied in to a game or company). Most of the puss for The Guild to go further and be bigger came from The Central London Committee. This was not a problem to start with, as they had a larger cash float to finance things, as they had most of the Members and an average attendance of about 100 people each and every Monday and Tuesday night. But things started to go wrong. The people who started the Penge Branch, no longer wanted to be part of The Guild, and disappeared. Some of the members in the East London Branch became jealous of the Central London Branch, and started to try and cause trouble. Because of this the West London Branch gave up, and became the independent club they were before. Central London Branch had to move venues a couple of times. The members voted on a new committee, who were more than lax about monetary issues, and the large float ceased to exist. As well as the large games library disappearing. East London Branch nearly left The Guild, but instead moved to Stratford. The South London Branch moved and then stopped meeting. Due to the mistakes of Central London Branch's committee, the people who came on Tuesday nights set up there own club. Tuesday was dropped, yet another venue was found for Monday night, and after a short time they stopped being part of The Guild. For a while, this just left East London Branch, some of who's were still complaining about The Guild when they where the only branch. Then at an Annual General Meeting, a portion of the membership decided to leave and set up a new club in Plaistow. This left a few core members in Stratford, (See East London), and a new Central London Branch. While numbers are now only a fraction of what they once where, the new committee will ensure that it will grow again. Plans are afoot to sta
