Pax Britannica league table Monday, 6/11/01, 10:10 AM

the league table was at this URL a while ago, altho I cannot access it at the moment. Users of the league table should remember that Pax by email is an infant hobby. Rapid email systems have only recently become widely accessible, and, as at June 2001, the vast majority of league players had played only 2 games!! Statistically, this is nowhere near a large enough sample to judge a player's skill. The scoring system for Pax is also under review; in particular the victory point divisors used for the seven Great Powers involved in the game.

Play by email game list Monday, 6/11/01, 9:36 AM

the game listing here is a runthrough of many of the principal wargames published since the seventies; unfortunately, few of them seem to be played at the moment by email, according to this list. However there are some notable exceptions, such as '1776' and '1830'.

there are a number of excellent games here, the best being the web-based ones where the game maps are maintained at a website - sparing you all the tedious map drawing and record keeping. Look for example at the '1483' Axis and Allies variant.

PBM on the web Monday, 6/11/01, 9:11 AM

what looks like a sizeable collection. Also has a form-based facility for advertising your own PBM game at the site. Shame about the lack of colour here!

this page shows the games played at this huge site, with the number of players engaged at any given time. Both Close Combat and Axis & Allies have been recommended to me: Diplomacy on the web was a brave experiment here, but the designers Hasbro had put too much effort into the graphics and not enough into the game mechanics [especially the AI] or ironing out the bugs. Diplomacy has now been dropped from the Zone, I notice. I await the appearance of a new improved version with interest.
